A seminar on judicial cooperation in the digital age, focusing on the Treaty on the Electronic Transmission of Requests for Legal and Judicial Cooperation between Central Authorities, approved within the Conference of Ministers of Justice of Ibero-American countries (COMJIB) in Medellín, Colombia, in July 2019, will take place on 30 June in a hybrid format.
The event includes a High Level panel, where the Minister of Justice, Francisca Van Dunem, the Minister of Justice of Paraguay and the Secretary General of the COMJIB will be present in Lisbon, as well as the Minister of Justice of Spain, the Minister of Justice of Cuba and the Minister of Education and Culture of Uruguay.
This panel will be followed by a Panel of Experts that will discuss the importance of technological tools for the exchange of information in the context of judicial cooperation. Participants include representatives from the Portuguese Ministry of Justice, the Ibero-American Association of Public Prosecutors, the EL PAcCTO Programme, the Ibero-American Judicial Summit, EUROPOL and the Portuguese and Spanish offices of EUROJUST.
The Medellín Treaty is a tool that aims to speed up judicial cooperation between COMJIB member states, regulating the use of the Iber@ platform as a formal and preferential means for the transmission and receipt of requests for judicial cooperation between Central Authorities, within the scope of treaties in force between the parties and which contemplate direct communication between these authorities.
Created in 1992 through the Treaty of Madrid, the COMJIB is an international organisation of an intergovernmental nature, with the participation of the Ministries of Justice and similar institutions from 22 countries of the Ibero-American community, with the aim of studying and promoting legal and judicial cooperation.
